Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen is a table service Restaurant located in Adventureland of Disney’s Magic Kingdom. Skipper Canteen in my opinion is my favorite restaurant in Magic Kingdom with its fun decor and bold Asian, South American and African flavors. We recently dined there with our boys (ages 7 and 4) for their first time and to our surprise, they were big fans of it too.
Skipper Canteen Location:
Park: Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom
Land: Adventureland, across from Swiss Family Treehouse
Reservations:
Reservations can now be made 60 days in advance and are highly recommended and sometimes hard to find. I was lucky to snag this reservation the morning of by refreshing the dining reservations page. There is also a Walk-Up List you can join via the My Disney Experience App when you get to the parks.
Theming:
Disney describes Skipper Canteen as having “3 curiously quirky rooms: the crew’s colonial-era Mess Hall (which is not messy at all, thank you very much); the Jungle Room, former family parlor of Dr. Albert Falls himself; and the S.E.A. Room – a once-secret meeting place for the Society of Explorers and Adventures!”
We were seated in the big Mess Hall which I enjoyed because of the open space but I did walk around to check out the details of the other two rooms.
I really enjoyed the tropical colors of the Jungle Room but I think my favorite is The S.E.A room because you have to walk through this fun wall of books.
Let’s talk about the food at Skipper Canteen:
As I’ve mentioned before, Jeff and I have eaten at Skipper Canteen many times before however we recently discovered the Not So Secret Menu including one very delicious appetizer from several friends and decided we needed to try it.
As soon as we sat down, we ordered our drinks and I asked for the Pao De Queijo! Well I said “cheese bread” and our server understood. It is gluten-friendly cheese bread served with chimichurri cream cheese for $12. It was delicious, a good portion, enough for all of us to share.
Pork
Jeff ordered the pork which was a huge portion. The pork was tender with a sweet and spicy sauce which paired nicely with the rice and bok choy vegetables.
Curry
I usually get the “Taste like Chicken” Because it is! dish, which has always been delicious but wanted to try something else this time. I am a huge curry fan so decided to try the Curried Vegetable Crew Stew. First thing I noticed was that it wasn’t as wet or runny as a usual curry but the flavors were bold with a kick of spice. The tofu was perfectly fried and delicious while the coconut rice was a pleasant surprise. I am not usually a huge coconut fan but that rice was so delicious and gave a constant again the spice from the curry vegetables.
Perkins Thai Noodles with Chicken
Another favorite of ours, we usually order a serving for the whole table to share. We opted for chicken instead of tofu and it was tender and flavorful. Because the noodles come with a spicy-soy-chilli garlic sauce, we ask for it on the side so we can control the spiciness of the dish.
Sizzling Savanna Grilled Steak
My boys are big steak fans so we ordered the grilled steak for them to share. It comes with 2 sides and you can pick between broccoli, vegetables, potatoes, rice, fruit, banana bites or Volcano! cake. It was a good size steak and they both enjoyed it.
There is also macaroni & cheese and crispy chicken on the kids menu.
This restaurant is a winner for us! The theming, back story and exotic cuisine makes it stand out above other theme park restaurants.
